3 Tips for Hiring the Right People

3 Tips for Hiring the Right People

Here are 3 tips to help you find the people you need!

1. Define Expectations Early

During job interviews, Nick May of Uncle's Games explains to applicants: "This job is not all fun and games. The large majority of it is cleaning the bathrooms, taking inventory, restocking shelves, and providing great customer service."

Filter out applicants with unrealistic fantasies of working at a game store by clearly setting expectations early and often.

2. Hire for Customer Service, Not Play Experience

It helps if an employee knows the rules of the games right off the bat, but what matters more to your success as a business is how your employees treat your customers.

Look for applicants with excellent customer service skills, such as patience, attentiveness, clear communication skills, and a positive demeanor.

Include a mock customer service experience in the interview to test how well an applicant might handle themselves.

3. Begin with a Trial Period

Start with a two-week trial to make sure the new employee is a good fit for the job and your team.

When the trial is over, give feedback on what they are doing well and what you'd like to see improved based on your previously defined expectations.

(Bonus:) Don't Forget Volunteers!

Customers can confuse your judges and tournament organizers for employees.

Avoid any potential negative interactions by training your volunteers just as you would train your staff.
