Standard Showdown: Things to Know

Standard Showdown: Things to Know

November 21, 2016 | 2 min to read

Standard Showdown begins this Saturday! Are you ready to run this new program in your store?

Here’s a few things you should know:

1. Standard Showdown is a weekly, Saturday Standard event

Standard Showdown events should occur on Saturdays, from November 26 to December 17. These events must be Standard, and must occur on Saturday.

Why Saturday? Our goal with this program is to provide a reliable weekly setting for Standard. We want to produce common expectations across the globe by providing Standard Showdown on a consistent day of the week.

The events must also be Ranked (i.e. include at least three rounds and at least eight players). Run either three or four rounds of Swiss (three for 8-16 players; four for 16+ players) with no cut to top 8.

Try This:

Our Magic community team created a helpful video that highlights the fun and exciting aspects of the current Standard format.

Share the video via your social media channels to help drive interest in Standard and then connect your Standard Showdown events as the best weekly gathering for competitive Standard play.

2. Your kits should arrive by Friday.

Each store that signed up for the program in Wizards Event Reporter will receive forty Standard Showdown boosters to distribute to players.

Issue up to ten Standard Showdown Boosters per event. We recommend you prioritize recipients in this order: 1) undefeated players, 2) returning players from previous weeks, 3) new players, 4) players who brought a friend.

What's in the Booster Packs?

Standard Showdown booster packs each contain three cards:

  • One premium card from a currently legal Standard set, including Kaladesh Inventions or Zendikar Expeditions, not including double-faced cards.
  • Two non-premium cards that are either a rare or a mythic rare from a set currently legal in Standard* (Battle for Zendikar up through Kaladesh).

*Cards from Oath of the Gatewatch and double-faced cards not included.

Kaladesh Inventions and Zendikar Expeditions appear in roughly 1 in 33 boosters.

Distributed cards will all be in English.

3. We want to see decklists!

We’re asking players to send in their decklists and highlighting some of our favorites on the Magic site.

Boost your players’ engagement in Standard and gain publicity for your store by helping your players get featured!

Try This:

During your pre-event announcements, encourage players to submit their decklists.

Provide a laptop or tablet at your event, with this submission form for players to provide their decklists to us digitally during downtimes.

Share the link out via your social media channels.

This decklist submission form will also be available by visiting magic.wizards.com. Players who cannot access the form may alternatively submit decklists via email to standardshowdown@wizards.com.

4. We want your feedback.

Participating WPN members will receive a link to a survey in an email at the end of the program.

Please take the time to fill out the survey when you receive it—your feedback is important to us. With your help we can make the Standard Showdown program even better.
