Congratulations, you've landed your first gig as a freelance space photographer—a Cosmolancer! While the pay is mediocre—and doesn't account for the danger—Cosmolancing is your lifelong dream realized. Take to the stars in the Cosmolancer game, a galactic reimagining of the Kingdoms game by Reiner Knizia! Place Photo Op tiles, Hazard tiles, and Imaging Devices to capture the most lucrative photos of space phenomena. But stay alert for cosmic dangers that can sabotage your shots. Earn the most Interstellar Credits over 3 rounds to win!
Ready for the adventure? Use this guide to help facilitate a fun Game Night in your store!
When playing Cosmolancer for the first time, it helps to have a more experienced player or someone familiar with the rules lead the session (they may or may not play themselves) and oversee new players through their first 1–3 turns, depending on the players' level of comfort with tile placement mechanics.
While there is no how-to-play video for Cosmolancer (yet!), this video for Kingdoms may serve as a helpful learning tool:
Be sure to have attendees register through Wizards EventLink using their Wizards Account—if they don't already have an account, they can sign up for one at myaccounts.wizards.com. You can read up on how to register
Place the gameboard in the center of play.
Each player chooses a color and takes all the Tier 2, 3, and 4 Imaging Devices in that color. They also take a number of Tier 1 Imaging Devices based on the number of players (see below):
2 players = 4 Tier 1 Imaging Devices
3 players = 3 Tier 1 Imaging Devices
4 players = 2 Tier 1 Imaging Devices
Sort the Interstellar Credits (credits) by denomination and set them beside the board to create a bank. Give each player 50 credits as starting currency.
Shuffle all tiles (Photo Op, Hazard, and Special) and spread them out in a facedown pile beside the board.
Each player draws one tile and secretly looks at it, then puts it face down in front of them.
Place the Cruiser token on the Cycle 1 space on the board to start. One game is played in 3 rounds, and this is where you will track which round you are on.
Have someone explain the rules. If players have questions about the rules, they can refer to the rulebook for clarification. Otherwise, players are ready to discover the infinite phenomena of the cosmos!
At the end of the event, hand out one foil tile sheet as a giveaway to each player that participated, while supplies last.
Check out the Cosmolancer product page.
We recommend hosting this event multiple times to showcase the game to multiple groups. Up to four players can try out the game at any one time, and there are enough giveaway foil promo tiles for up to fifteen players.
If you have more than one group interested in trying out the game at the same time, consider using an additional copy from your inventory or scheduling the groups at different times.
Be sure to have copies of the game available to sell to potential buyers. At conventions, once a consumer was taken through a demo, this game was an instant purchase, so we'd advise you to carry plenty of stock!
After you've run your demo events, if you have a games library, consider keeping your demo copy of Cosmolancer there for players to try out!
Don't miss the opportunity to showcase Cosmolancer and draw players into this exciting new spacefaring adventure! The event runs November 7 through November 23, but you must schedule by October 30 using the Cosmolancer – Avalon Hill Game Nights template to secure your spot and receive promo support. Only the first 200 stores to schedule by the deadline will receive promotional kits—including a two-page demo guide, a free game, and 15 foil-finish tile partsheet promos —so act quickly to be among the first to bring Cosmolancer to players!
