Introducing Magic Weekend

On the ten year anniversary of the WPN, here’s Jacob Nourigat, In-Store Play Specialist, on the its latest evolution: Magic Weekend.

October 2018 marks the ten-year anniversary of the Wizards Play Network, and it’s been ten years of constant evolution.

It’s my pleasure to introduce the latest step in that evolution: Magic Weekend, a rotating, quarterly, mid-season event.

Magic Weekend: An “Innovation” Event

In a way, Magic Weekend is less of an event than it is a category of events. Think Battlebond or Conspiracy. We call products like these our “Innovation” SKUs—annual products that get to break the rules a little, that get permission to do things other products can’t.

Magic Weekend will be to your play area what Battlebond and Conspiracy are to your shelves. It’s our “Innovation” event: a space for us to experiment, once per season, with new ideas, formats, even prizes. The features will be new each time.

That’s how Ravnica Weekend was conceived. We thought, we’ve got events for players who want a social experience, players who want competition, players who want something in between. But what about players who want flavor? What would that event look like?

We’re going to find out in just over a week.

Ravnica Weekend: Variations On a Theme

As of this writing, WPN members are planning for the first Ravnica Weekend (Guilds of Ravnica) and scheduling the second (Ravnica Allegiance). These events represent two variations on the same theme: they’re flavor-focused in-store events, one social, one competitive.

Ravnica Weekend Guilds of Ravnica goes from November 9 to the 11th.

It’s more of a social event. The format is casual four-pack drafts (think of all the Guildgates!), Guild Kit battles, and D&D sessions based on Ravnica. The prizes are foil basic lands and 11x 14” prints—both of which celebrate the set’s five guilds.

Ravnica Weekend Ravnica Allegiance February 16 and 17.

It’s more on the competitive side. The format is either Standard, Draft, or Sealed (at least three rounds, at least eight players), plus more Guild Kit battles and D&D sessions. The kits are massive: 30 full-art foil rares, 1 playmat, 10 Guild prints, 20 foil guild lands, and a stand-alone D&D adventure based on Ravnica.

If those kit contents sound familiar, you may know what’s coming next: we’ve collapsed Ravnica Weekend and Store Championship into one kit, and the Core Set 2019 Store Championship last September will be the last event of its kind.

Ravnica Weekend Cheat Sheet

You’re prepping for one, you’re about to schedule the other, and they’re very different events. Here’s what you need to know:
