Two Prerelease Changes Coming with Reality Fracture

At-Home Prerelease will be retired globally with Reality Fracture, and Two-Headed Giant gets an updated product mix. Here's what's changing, what's not, and what it means for your store.

Two changes are coming to Prerelease beginning with Reality Fracture: the At-Home Prerelease program will end in all regions, and Two-Headed Giant Prerelease will get an updated product configuration. Here's what you need to know.

At-Home Prerelease Is No Longer Available

At-Home Prerelease was introduced during COVID restrictions to keep players connected when in-store play wasn't always possible. With in-store play available and growing globally, we'll no longer offer the At-Home Prerelease scheduling template in Wizards EventLink, starting with Reality Fracture Prerelease.

You may continue to sell Prerelease Packs to players outside of scheduled events during WPN Early Sales—that is not changing. However, those sales will no longer count as event participation and will not contribute to ticket metrics or future Prerelease allocations.

Two-Headed Giant Prerelease Format Update

We're updating the product configuration for Two-Headed Giant (2HG) Prerelease events to bring them into alignment with other Two-Headed Giant Sealed events, beginning with the Reality Fracture Prerelease.

What's Changing

Currently, each team receives two Prerelease Packs for the event and builds two decks from the combined pool. Beginning with Reality Fracture, each team will receive one Prerelease Pack plus two Play Boosters, using the combined card pool to build their two 40-card decks.

The two Play Boosters for each team may be sourced from your launch order for the set. Your free-of-charge prize booster allotment remains designated for event prizing and may not be distributed for this purpose.

We're making this change for three reasons:

  • Balanced card selection. The updated sealed pool makes card choices for the team more comparable to the 1v1 Prerelease player experience, creating a more balanced and easier deck-building experience.
  • Lower barrier to entry. Reducing the product cost per team makes it easier and more affordable for experienced players to bring a friend to their first Prerelease, helping you welcome more new players into your community.
  • Magic Tournament Rules (MTR) alignment. This total number of Play Boosters for a team aligns with what the MTR recommends for Two-Headed Giant Sealed Deck play.

Prize support does not change with this update; the recommended prize of two Play Boosters per player remains the same.

Also, your allocations are not affected. A Two-Headed Giant pair still counts as two tickets toward future Prerelease allocations and Prerelease prizes.

These changes take effect beginning with Reality Fracture Prerelease, so be sure your staff and community are aware of the updated policies before your events begin.

Prerelease Changes FAQ

Can I still sell Prerelease Packs to players who want to open them at home?
Yes. You can still sell Prerelease Packs during the WPN Early Sales period; however, as with sales of products not tied to in-store event participation, these won't count toward ticket metrics or future allocations.

Does the 2HG change affect my future Prerelease Pack allocations?
No. A Two-Headed Giant team still counts as two tickets for allocation and prize support purposes; nothing changes there.

Will I make less revenue from Two-Headed Giant Prerelease with this change?
Each team now uses one Prerelease Pack plus two Play Boosters instead of two Prerelease Packs, so the product spend per team is lower. That said, the reduced product cost per team lowers the barrier for new players to join, which can potentially mean more players at your events and more long-term opportunities to grow your community.

Can I still offer two Prerelease Packs per team if my players prefer it?
Yes. Prerelease events are flexible and community focused, so you may continue offering two Prerelease Packs per team if your players prefer it.

Note that our consumer-facing communications will describe the new recommended configuration (one Prerelease Pack per team). If you run your event differently, communicate your structure clearly in advance and review it with players before the event begins.
