2027 Booster Changes for WPN Retailers

Get ready for 2027 booster changes: the Play Booster rename, new pack contents, and handling God Packs at events.

Play Boosters and Collector Boosters will change beginning with the first Magic set of 2027, Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. You can explore all the details in the announcement; here's what you need to know for your store.

Play Boosters Become Booster Packs

Play Boosters will be called Booster Packs with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. This is a name change, not a new product. These are still the boosters players open at Prereleases and other events throughout the season, just with a simple name players already know.

More to Find in Booster Packs

Booster Packs are also getting two exciting updates:

  • Japan Showcase cards, previously available only in Collector Boosters, can now appear in the wildcard slot of Booster Packs.
  • Drop rates of foil rare and mythic rare cards in Booster Packs will increase.

Changes to Foil Commons and Uncommons

Foil commons and uncommons will no longer appear in Booster Packs, and a foil will not be guaranteed in every pack. However, when a foil is opened in a Booster Pack, it will be a rare or mythic rare card.

Collector Boosters will also contain two fewer foil commons and one fewer foil uncommon. These cards won't be replaced, so each Collector Booster will have three fewer cards overall.

God Packs Arrive

God Packs will appear in both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters in every Magic Multiverse set starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. They are expected to begin appearing in Universes Beyond sets sometime in 2028.

A God Pack is the booster every player hopes to open. On the outside, it looks just like a Booster Pack or Collector Booster. Inside, it's packed with rare and mythic rare cards, including a variety of Booster Fun treatments.

God Packs are not a separate product to order; they randomly appear among the Booster Packs and Collector Boosters you'll stock. They're exceptionally rare, but when players find them, it's cause for celebration.

In Booster Packs, 1 in 1,000 will contain:

  • 10 non-foil rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 2 non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 1 "You did it!" God Pack celebration card

In Collector Boosters, 1 in 300 will contain:

  • 5 foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 3 foil default-frame rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 3 non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
  • 1 foil land card
  • 1 "You did it!" God Pack celebration card

Handling God Packs at Your Events

Opening a God Pack can create an unforgettable moment for players and collectors, but it also presents a special circumstance during a Limited format event.

If a player opens a God Pack, they should stop and call for a judge or tournament organizer. Checking in immediately helps prevent confusion, regardless of how you decide to proceed.

You have discretion over whether the God Pack remains in the event. For any event intended to feel competitive, however, we strongly recommend the following:

  • Celebrate the moment! Call attention to the rare find and share the excitement with your community.
  • Remove the God Pack from the event. Let the player who opened it keep it for their collection.
  • Replace it at no charge. Give the player an unopened Booster Pack from the same set so they can continue playing.

Removing and replacing the God Pack preserves a fair play experience while giving the player a memorable collectible. This approach also matches how God Packs are handled at competitive events where Wizards of the Coast provides the product, such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour. At those events, God Packs must be removed and replaced.

For casual events, you may choose to leave the God Pack in the draft or sealed pool. This could work well at a Prerelease that uses Player List Only pairings, for example. In most cases, though, we recommend removing and replacing the God Pack.

Prepare Your Store

We recommend walking your staff through the new Booster Pack name and contents and deciding how your store will handle God Packs during events. That preparation will help your team answer customer questions clearly and keep events running smoothly.
