Get Ready for Two New Ways to Play Commander

Commander Box League and Two-Headed Giant Commander Night offer new ways to bring Commander fans into your store and keep them coming back.

WPN stores will have two exciting new Commander experiences to offer their communities when Edge of Eternities arrives: Commander Box League and Two-Headed Giant Commander Night. These events offer fresh ways to engage players with one of Magic's most popular formats and reward them with participation promo cards.

Expanded Commander Promo Support

Starting with Edge of Eternities, Commander Party promo cards will be known simply as Commander promos and may be awarded to players for participating in Commander Box League, Two-Headed Giant Commander Night, and Commander Party events. This gives you more opportunities to reward participation and encourage return play.

WPN stores will receive an increased quantity of Commander promos to accommodate these new programs. These promos are non-foil by default but will be traditional foil at WPN Premium locations. Only Commander Box League, Two-Headed Giant Commander Night, and Commander Party events are eligible for Commander promo support; Commander promos are not to be awarded for any other Commander events.

Commander Box League Events

Commander Box League offers a fresh twist for players who enjoy both Commander and Limited formats, blending the two into a week-long event series during Edge of Eternities Prerelease, running July 25–31.

Players purchase a Play Booster box at your store (they earn Buy-a-Box promos for the purchase if available), open it, and construct a 60-card Commander deck using its contents (cards from outside this pool, including the Buy-a-Box and Commander promos, may not be used in deck building). The event uses modified deck-building rules to allow for creativity and flexibility in a Sealed-style Commander format. Players can then use their decks to join pods and play throughout the week leading up to release.

Adding Commander Play to Prerelease Week

Commander Box League expands the Prerelease week to an even broader community of players, inviting players who love Commander to come out and enjoy the energy surrounding Prerelease by playing with the latest set in this dynamic take on their favorite format. It also invites players to return throughout the Prerelease week to continue pitting their decks against other Commander Box League participants.

With unlimited scheduling available during Prerelease (July 25–31), we recommend offering multiple event times throughout the weekend—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—to kick off the event and then follow-up Commander Box League events through the remainder of Prerelease week to invite players to continue battling with their decks and to maximize play opportunities.

Two-Headed Giant Commander Night

Two-Headed Giant Commander Night is an ideal event for introducing new players to Magic with the support of friends or mentors, while also giving returning players a chance to test new Commander deck builds. Participants earn Commander promo cards for playing. In this fun, casual format, teams of two face off in two-versus-two matches, following the rules of Two-Headed Giant Commander play.

Bringing in At-Home Commanders

This monthly event is designed to encourage Commander players who may be hesitant to participate in stores by hosting team play. These players love the format and play with friends at home, but making the leap to in-store play can feel daunting due to perceived competitiveness. The Two-Headed Giant Commander format presents a casual and supportive play style they can enjoy alongside their friends as teammates.

Commander players looking to improve their skills can also find fun in Two-Headed Giant Commander Night by pairing up with more experienced players who can guide them as they learn the format and improve their Commander decks.

We recommend scheduling this event on a consistent monthly basis to build familiarity and encourage players to return regularly for an experience they enjoy.

All the event details are available on the Two-Headed Giant Commander Night event page.
