What Is Prerelease?

Prerelease celebrates the launch of a new set and is your players' first opportunity to explore what the set has to offer. Players open a Prerelease Pack, build a 40-card Sealed deck, and play with the set for the first time in a casual and fun environment.

Prerelease events can be scheduled starting at 12 p.m. local time on Friday, November 14, and throughout the week until November 20.

Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender Prerelease Packs

Character-Themed Prerelease Packs

There are five versions of the Prerelease Pack for Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender, each featuring a different character: Aang, Katara, Azula, Zuko, and Toph. Each includes a seeded Play Booster themed for the same character.

You have flexibility in how you distribute Prerelease Packs. You might let players choose based on earliest preregistrations on a first-come, first-served basis, or assign them randomly on the day of the event, allowing players to trade Prerelease Packs before they are opened.

Extra-Large Dice Bags for Repeat Play

To promote repeat play, you will receive extra-large dice bags as rewards for players who register with their Wizards Account (guest account registrations are ineligible) and participate in two or more Prerelease events. These collectible dice bags feature dye-sublimated printings of each of the five characters from the Prerelease Packs and are large enough to store cards, counters, and more. We recommend giving eligible players their extra-large Prerelease dice bags at the start of the event so they can use them during play.

Early Access at WPN Stores

As a WPN member store, Prerelease gives you the opportunity to sell new set products a week ahead of wider release. This early access builds excitement, drives foot traffic, and rewards your community for supporting their local game store.

Commander Box League

In addition to the classic Prerelease experience, players have another option they can enjoy: Commander Box League events. These offer an exciting way to learn and play with the latest set alongside Prerelease events. With unlimited scheduling during Prerelease, we recommend scheduling times throughout the Prerelease weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) to kick off the event and then events throughout Prerelease week to invite players to return and continue playing their decks.

Booster Draft Events

You are welcome to run Booster Draft events that use Play Boosters from the new set plus your free-of-charge Prerelease prizing Play Boosters. Prerelease events run using the Booster Draft format will not have special scheduling templates, nor will they count towards future Prerelease Pack and prize support allocations. You can use the "Create Custom" tool to schedule these in Wizards EventLink.

At-Home Prerelease

At-Home Prerelease is available all week beginning Friday, November 14. For At-Home Prerelease, players are provided a Prerelease Pack to play with outside your store. Like in-store Prerelease, enrolling players in an At-Home event will contribute to your play metrics and future Prerelease allocations.

At-Home Prerelease Packs may be provisioned, and Prerelease early sales may begin, as soon as your store is open for the day, but structured events must wait until 12 p.m. local time on the first day of Prerelease.

Schedule and Promote Your Prerelease Events

Tournament Prerelease events (with rounds) and player-list-only events (without rounds) are both available to be scheduled from the Prerelease event template on Wizards EventLink. Select "Swiss" as the pairing method when scheduling a structured tournament-style Prerelease or "Player List Only" to schedule a casual Prerelease where players find their own matches.

Commander Box League events are also available to be scheduled during Prerelease week only using the "Commander Box League" template.

Boost your event visibility with available marketing resources, including Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender digital marketing assets. WPN stores in the US, Canada, Guam, and Puerto Rico can also purchase customizable materials from the WPN Marketing Portal, and WPN Premium stores in these regions have a $300 seasonal promotional marketing credit for Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender that expires on January 5, 2026.
