Turtle Team-Up: A Cooperative Way to Play and Teach Magic
Discover Turtle Team-Up, a cooperative Magic experience that welcomes new players, engages families, and helps WPN stores turn fans into long-term players.
In this article:
We created Turtle Team-Up with a simple goal: build a Magic product that captures the fun of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is easy to learn, and helps you welcome new players into your store. The result is a cooperative experience that keeps the strategy and thrill of Magic intact while shifting head-to-head competition into a team-up adventure for friends and families.
What's in the box:
- 4 60-card Magic decks
- 1 enemy deck with 11 bosses
- 17 event cards
- 4 Magic: The Gathering® | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Play Boosters
- 1 instruction booklet (includes a link to an optional instructional video)
Turtle Team-Up is designed for two to four players. Each player selects a Turtle-themed deck—Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, or Raphael—and joins forces against an automated enemy deck led by Shredder and the Foot Clan. Instead of competing, players sit side by side, take turns together, and work as a team to win.
Where Turtle Team-Up Fits the Magic Lineup and Your Store
Turtle Team-Up fills a key space in Magic's lineup, offering cooperative play that functions as a ready-to-play entry point. Families and new players are looking for something simple, approachable, and playable right out of the box.
"We wanted this to feel like a board game experience," says Executive Producer Athena Froehlich, who headed up the production of the Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set. "We wanted something you could start quickly and finish before dinner. And with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spanning so many generations, it presented a great opportunity for families to get together and enjoy Magic and the Turtles at the same time."
For WPN retailers, Turtle Team-Up can fill several valuable roles:
- A demo and teaching product for Magic Academy
- A family-friendly entry point to Magic
- A bridge product for board game players and casual audiences
- A standout Universes Beyond product that draws Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans into your store
Its board game-style presentation makes it easy to merchandise beyond the traditional Magic shelf. "Even the packaging is meant to feel like a board game," says Launch Captain Brandon Kreines. "That helps signal that this is welcoming and different." With the added strength of its beloved Ninja Turtles theme, Turtle Team-Up is designed to spark interest and reach new audiences.
The Power of the Team-Up
Turtle Team-Up challenged us to do something Magic explores only occasionally: create a cooperative product that remains unmistakably Magic.
"We were very inspired by past cooperative experiences," says Principal Game Designer Corey Bowen, who led the design of Turtle Team-Up. "But we really wanted this to feel close to how Magic works. You should be able learn how to play with this and then transition naturally into a one-on-one game."
Each Turtle deck emphasizes different strengths—damage, defense, and late-game scaling—creating intuitive synergies that encourage players to coordinate strategies. As the game unfolds, players watch card interactions play out across the table. Strategies take shape, teamwork becomes critical, and momentum builds. "There's this pivot moment. The bosses rough you up early, and then as a team you overcome them and start rolling. It feels like a real story arc."
A Play Experience That Changes Game to Game
Turtle Team-Up isn't just a one-time teaching tool. With eleven bosses and a rotating lineup that changes from game to game, no two playthroughs feel exactly the same.
"There's a ton of replayability," Corey says. "Different combinations of bosses, different phases—it plays differently every time."
The booklet includes achievement-style challenges that encourage players to play again and refine their strategies. As players grow more confident, they can also try the Turtle decks in traditional head-to-head play or experiment with new deck combinations and modes of play, keeping the experience fresh.
An Excellent Tool for Teaching Magic
Because Turtle Team-Up casts players as allies, it removes a hurdle new players face: learning while competing against someone more experienced.
"Usually when you teach someone Magic, you're sitting across from them," says Corey. "With a cooperative experience, you're sitting next to them, and that changes everything."
Store staff or experienced players get to play alongside learners, answer questions in real time, and guide progress as allies. That makes Turtle Team-Up an exceptional fit for Magic Academy: Learn to Play events and casual demos (stores in North America will receive a demo copy to help support this). It's also a great addition to your in-store library if you have one, keeping it readily available for future teaching and play opportunities.
Designed for Families and Intergenerational Play
One of the most exciting aspects of Turtle Team-Up is how it brings different generations to the same table.
"We didn't have a product that was truly tuned for intergenerational play," says Athena. "Turtle Team-Up was designed from the ground up to fill that gap."
A parent can guide a child through their first game of Magic side-by-side and without the tension of facing off against them across the table. This intergenerational learning dynamic works in reverse, too. A child who already plays Magic can take the lead, helping a parent who grew up with the Turtles learn the game for the first time.
So, the focus in Turtle Team-Up shifts from "Who's better?" to "How do we win together?" Questions become conversations. Mistakes become challenges to learn from together. Wins become shared accomplishments.
Corey says, "It's not just about age—it's about experience. Someone who knows Magic can bring someone new along without either of them feeling awkward."
The result fun gameplay where roles can be reversed, experience and confidence can grow, and both generations get to feel like heroes in a half shell.
First Games to Long-Term Players
Turtle Team-Up is more than just a product on your shelves—it's a gateway. It offers new players a welcoming first step into Magic while delivering the energy and excitement that define the game. For board game lovers and families, it's a fresh option for game night. For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, it's a fun, collectible way to connect with beloved characters. And for stores like yours, it's a powerful tool that helps transform first games into lasting player relationships.
