Commander Box League is an exciting event series designed for the Prerelease period, offering players a Limited-style Commander experience with the newest set, promo card rewards, and community-focused fun.

What Is Commander Box League?

Commander Box League runs during Prerelease and offers a fun Sealed-style Commander experience. Players buy a Play Booster box, build a 60-card Commander deck from it, and play league matches over the course of the event.

While games use standard Commander rules, deck construction follows unique Commander Box League guidelines.

Note that Commander Box League is available only for in-store play; there is no at-home play option as there is with Prerelease events.

Commander Box League Deck Rules

After players open their Play Booster box, they construct a 60-card Commander deck from the contents. Buy-a-Box and Commander promos may not be used in deck building.

• Decks may include multiple copies of cards opened from the Play Booster box.
• Any legal commander opened is allowed.
• Color identity rules in deck building are ignored; players may build decks with any colors they want, regardless of their commander’s color identity. Note: commander color identity still applies when cards refer to color identity (for example, with Arcane Signet).

Players may adjust their decks between games using cards from their Play Booster box.

Scheduling and Reporting

We recommend scheduling one Commander Box League event for each day of Prerelease weekend. Players can be enrolled in the event each day they participate, allowing you to earn event metrics credit for every entry.

Pairing and Gameplay

Pods are composed of three to four players, with pairing left to the store to decide. The entry fee is at the store’s discretion, and stores are responsible for providing the Play Booster box for entry.

Normal Commander rules apply for gameplay in these events (e.g., 40 starting life, commander damage tracking, etc.).

Commander Promo Cards

WPN stores will receive an allocation of Commander promo cards to support the three Commander programs: Commander Party, Commander Box League, and Two-Headed Giant Commander Night. These promos are non-foil by default but will be traditional foil at WPN Premium locations.

Because entry requires purchasing a Play Booster box, participants in Commander Box League events are also eligible for the Buy-a-Box promo.

Distribute to each participant:

• One Commander promo card
• One Buy-a-Box promo
• Any additional prizing for the event you’ve chosen

Schedule and Promote Your Events

Scheduling for Commander Box League events is now open in Wizards EventLink for September 19–25. Scheduling is unlimited for this event during the Prerelease period.

We recommend scheduling times each day during Prerelease weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) to ensure play opportunities and encourage turnout. Schedule additional games throughout the Prerelease week and invite players to return and continue playing their decks.

Players can be enrolled in a separate daily event for each day they participate, contributing to your store’s play metrics for each entry.

WPN stores in the US, Canada, Guam, and Puerto Rico can also purchase customizable materials from the WPN Marketing Portal, and WPN Premium stores in these regions have a $300 seasonal promotional marketing credit for Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man that expires on November 1.
