FAQ: In-Store Play Policy Explained

April 6, 2021 | 2 min to read

With the Wizards Play Network in-store play suspension continuing in many parts of the world, it's important to fully understand our current in-store play policies.

We’ve compiled answers to your most frequently asked in-store play policy questions. Please note that this is intended as a guide solely for WPN in-store play policy. You should always independently refer to local laws and ordinances for official health and safety guidance.

Can I run any official WPN programs in my store if play is suspended in my region?

  • No.

Can I run an unofficial Prerelease?

  • No.

Can I run any unofficial in-store events?

  • You are allowed to run unofficial events if permitted under applicable local laws and guidelines, but you cannot organize, advertise, or promote it as a WPN event. Wizards event management tools and promotional materials cannot be used for unofficial events.

Can I run any official WPN programs in my store if play is suspended in my region?

  • No.

If you're in a region where in-store play is suspended, running any in-store WPN program is against WPN policy, and can result in your removal from the WPN.

Here are examples of WPN play programs that you may not host in-store:

  • Prerelease

  • Launch Party

  • Friday Night Magic

  • Commander Nights

All regions are free to host these events remotely through webcam using platforms like SpellTable beta, even if in-store play is allowed in your region.

Any in-store events scheduled in Wizards EventLink in regions where in-store play is suspended are removed daily.

Can I run an unofficial in-store Prerelease if in-store play is suspended in my region?

  • No.

If in-store play is suspended in your region, you cannot run unofficial in-store Prerelease due to the intersection of two WPN policies:

  1. No sanctioned in-store play

  2. No utilization of Prerelease materials except for official Prerelease events before release*

If in-store play is currently suspended in your region, we strongly suggest making it clear to your community that participation in official, sanctioned At-Home and Webcam Prereleases are the only ways to receive promo materials.

*Note that this policy applies to all regions at all times—you can never use Prerelease materials outside of an official Prerelease event.

Can I run any unofficial events if in-store play is suspended in my region?

You are allowed to run unofficial events if permitted under applicable local laws and guidelines, but you cannot organize, advertise, or promote it as a WPN event. Wizards event management tools and promotional materials cannot be used for unofficial events.

As a reminder, you are in no way encouraged or obligated to run events—a snapshot of your metrics from Q1 of 2020 will be used until further notice for promos and product allocations, and events reported during this period will never impact your play metrics.

If you are in a region where WPN play is suspended but decide you are able to host events within the guidelines set by your local health authorities, you can choose to do so.

However, you cannot organize advertise, or promote it as a WPN event and cannot provide promotional materials, including Promo Packs.

Additionally, you cannot use our reporting tools for in-store play. Any in-store events scheduled in Wizards EventLink will be removed daily.

Why?

If someone sees an event happening at your store, that person may report exactly what they see: an in-store event. And if it looks like you're hosting official in-store play, it can be escalated to the investigation team.

We understand everyone is eager to begin providing a space where players can return to normalcy, and we thank you for your understanding of our in-store play policies.

If you are aware of a store that is not abiding by these (or any) WPN policy, please report it to Retail Support.
