Prepare for Magic Academy events with this overview of Welcome Decks, the new player-friendly onboarding tool that showcases all of what Magic has to offer.
Welcome Decks made their return with Duskmourn: House of Horror, and we hope you've been enjoying using them as new player onboarding tools. With Magic Academy: Learn to Play on the horizon—starting November 15—it’s a good time to review Welcome Deck contents, as well as tips for using them at your in-store demo events.
As of this article's publishing, Welcome Decks are only available in English. For new player events such as Magic Academy: Learn to Play and Magic Academy: Deck Building, you may support players who prefer to learn in a different language by using the Magic: The Gathering Foundations Beginner Box.
Welcome Decks are a promotional material sent to English-language WPN stores and select non-English WPN stores in Asia-Pacific and Latin America ahead of certain Magic: The Gathering releases. Each Welcome Deck comes with two 30-card decks, one of which will be the color on the packaging exterior and another of random color of Magic.
One important detail to note for your newer players: Welcome Decks are not Standard legal. Instead, they showcase a wide breadth of cards from across Magic's history, showcasing everything the game has to offer—including Booster Fun variants of some cards!
Welcome Decks offer a mix-and-match gameplay style similar to Jumpstart products, making them an awesome tool in your new player toolkit.
In this article on DailyMTG, you can find the decklists for each of the five Welcome Decks. The cards in each deck are all reprints from past releases, with the Planeswalker stamp in the bottom left-hand corner distinguishing them from their original printings.
Welcome Decks are an intuitive new player product that delivers an easy learn-to-play experience. You can—and should—use them whenever you're teaching new players at your store, whether during a walk-in demo or at a dedicated new player event like Magic Academy: Learn to Play.
We recommend you allow players to keep their Welcome Decks after learning, at your discretion; if you want to keep a set for demo-only use, that's up to you. Make sure your players know whether they're able to take home their Welcome Decks to continue their learning journey!
Any walk-in demo events that use Welcome Decks can be reported as a custom event in Wizards EventLink; simply use the "New Player Event" format option! Events reported in this way will count toward your overall play metrics, and further demonstrates to us how Welcome Decks are being used in your store.
As a final note, you cannot sell Welcome Decks outright; however, they may be provided to players at events with paid entry. You can reference usage information anytime on the WPN Promo Usage & Policy Hub.
The next shipment of Welcome Decks will arrive to English-speaking WPN stores, as well as select stores in Asia-Pacific and Latin America, with your Magic: The Gathering Foundations promotional kit. It's never too early to start making plans for how you'll use them in-store! If you haven't already, schedule your Magic: The Gathering Foundations events and prepare to welcome new players to the Gathering with these decks.
